Is Opening the Door for a Woman Still Important?

By Stefan Donawa · The Donawa Standard · October 27, 2026

Somewhere along the way, simple acts of courtesy became something worth debating.

Should a man still open the door for a woman? Is chivalry outdated? Does holding a door really make a difference in modern dating?

My answer is simple: Yes, opening the door still matters.

Not because women are incapable of opening their own doors. Not because men should expect praise or affection in return. And certainly not because a relationship's success depends on who reaches for the door handle first.

It matters because consideration matters.

The Bare Minimum Shouldn’t Be Complicated

I don't believe a man needs to rush around his car every time he takes a woman somewhere just to open her door.

If that's your style, there's nothing wrong with it. But personally, I don't think it's necessary to demonstrate respect.

However, when you're walking into a restaurant together, entering a store, or approaching the entrance of a building, why wouldn't you hold the door?

It takes almost no additional effort.

You're already walking through the entrance. Holding it open for the woman accompanying you is a simple opportunity to demonstrate attentiveness.

That's what I consider the bare minimum.

Chivalry Isn’t About Money

Modern dating conversations frequently revolve around who should pay for dinner, how much a first date should cost, and whether traditional expectations still belong in relationships.

But some of the most meaningful gestures don't cost anything.

Opening a door costs nothing. Being punctual costs nothing. Listening when someone speaks doesn't require an expensive dinner reservation. Remembering something important about your partner doesn't require a luxury vacation.

These are small demonstrations of consideration that can become habits.

A man's standard shouldn't be measured only by what he's willing to spend. It should also be reflected in how consistently he treats people.

Courtesy Is Not a Transaction

There's another distinction that matters.

Holding a door should never be treated as a transaction.

You don't open a door because you expect a woman to give you her phone number, agree to another date, or reward you with affection.

You do it because you believe in treating people well.

And that same courtesy shouldn't disappear when you're interacting with someone you aren't romantically interested in.

Character is demonstrated through consistency, not selective performances.

The Small Things Reveal the Bigger Picture

Will opening a door make you a great boyfriend or husband?

Of course not.

A man can open every door and still struggle with honesty, communication, emotional maturity, or commitment.

But that's precisely why I believe these small gestures are worth discussing.

They aren't substitutes for character. They're opportunities to practice it.

Being thoughtful in small moments can reinforce a mindset of paying attention to others.

And when that mindset carries into communication, accountability, and emotional support, it becomes much more meaningful.

Raising the Standard

The purpose of The Bare Minimum series isn't to suggest that men must follow a rigid collection of outdated dating rules.

It's to encourage men to think more intentionally about how they approach dating and relationships.

We can debate who pays for the first date or whether traditional gender roles still make sense.

But basic consideration shouldn't be controversial.

When you're walking into a restaurant with a woman, hold the door.

Not because you have to. Not because you expect something in return. But because it takes almost no effort to be considerate.

Chivalry doesn't have to be extravagant. Sometimes it's as simple as holding the door.
